In the south central part of Commerce Township, five miles north and fifteen minutes from Novi, tucked into Oakland County, are 2.37 miles and over 7,000 people making up the city of Walled Lake. Sunlight glistens against smooth waters of a lake that has witnessed the best and worst of days. With a bit of love and attention, the focal point of the city, Walled Lake, has been restored to a natural beauty in which animals and humans delight. But the lake itself isn’t the only area in which history is preserved with respect.

About Walled Lake

Built in 1883, the Foster House was a safe haven where slaves along the underground railroad could eat and sleep. In 1997, 114 years after its story was written, Foster Farmhouse was moved from its original foundations on Pontiac Trail to Riley Park to avoid demolition. The Foster House once belonged to Dr. Sarah Banks, one of the first female graduates of University of Michigan’s Medical School, and one of the first female doctors in the state. She rubbed elbows with the likes of Henry and Clara Ford, and was dear friends with Susan B. Anthony.

A myriad of museums pepper the surrounding areas of Walled Lake to tell the stories of times past.
